Recently I have had the joy of working on my school's play as the director. Last year I was the backstage manger of the play. It was reflecting on both experiences I was able to see the differences in which each role learns and of course jobs, I will detail them.
As a backstage manger I was in charge of everything behind the scenes on the stage at least. So I had to learn the curtain cues, character cues, and most importantly the sets. As a director I assign roles, blocking( where they stand etc.), develop characters and help with the delivery of the lines etc. In reality the major difference between the two jobs was the people connection. When I'm not directly with them I tend to focus more on the play and how it can be improved more so then the actual people. Not to say I don't care about them but I just don't know them as well. As if I am backstage I usually talk to them more and focus more on who I will be with on the night of the performance. I found also I found I was felt more important in the play than being the backstage manger. I believe this is due to the fact my goal is to become a director. I also felt I could express my opinion more openly than as a backstage manger. Both experiences where very intriguing and helpful for me to my goal of becoming an actor and director and I am thankful for them.
